Abhyangam: An Ayurvedic Massage

Abhyangam is a popular body massage in ayurveda. The word abhyangaitself means to massage. In Ayurveda, the Abhyangam massage has become popular because of its effective way of conditioning the body. Abhyangam can be used therapeutically. The massage is designed around each individual, to suit his or her disease or condition. An ayurvedic physician can assess this and will then decide on the appropriate oils and the exact way of massage.

Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead (the 'third eye'). It was developed by vaidyas (practitionars of Ayurveda) in Kerala, India for use in sukhachikitsa (restorative therapy) and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shira 'head' and dhara 'flow'. The liquids used in shirodhara depend on what is being treated, but can include oil, milk, buttermilk, coconut water, or even plain water. Ayurvedic body scrub that details the specific use of an herbal paste called lepam, which is made from dry grain, medicated milk.

Podikizhi

This is a type of Swedana Chikitsa (fomentation) wherein medicated powders are made into poultice and used for giving fomentation. Drugs like vacha, sarshapam, jatamamsi etc. are made into fine powder, fried and tied in cloth pieces in the form of boluses. These are made hot frequently throughout the procedure. Elakizhi “Patram”and “illa”mean leaf. ‘Kizhi’ means ‘bundle’. or Patrasweda’ is kind of sudation theraphy using herbal leaves. Leaves of Arka (calotropisgigatea) Karanja (pongamiaglabra) Dhatura (dutura metel) and so on are chopped and mixed with grated coconut mustard and rock salt. The proportion of the ingredients varies according to the symptoms of the disease. The mixture is warmed in a pan smeared with coconut oil and then tied up in linen.

Ksheera Dhara

Relaxing treatment as Sirodhara but instead of herbal oil, herbal milk is poured over the forehead or over the whole body. Great therapy for people suffering from headaches from Vata and Pitta predominance, Insomnia and mental tension. Dhara means ‘pouring of medicinal liquid’ in the traditional system of Ayurveda. When this treatment is done with milk (Ksheera), it is called ‘Ksheeradhara’. To do this, cow’s milk is preferred, but buffalo’s milk is also used at times. Decoctions of various herbs are added to the milk.

Thalapothichil

Thalapothichil is a special procedure of application of medicated paste on the head. Thalapothichil is also called as Shirolepa (anointment to head/ head pack). Thalapothichil is from Malayalam where thalarefers to head and pothichil is covering. It is the traditional Ayurveda treatment of Kerala which is very effective in various psychosomatic disorders. Basically Thalapothichil is cooling treatment.

Thalam

Thalam is the Malayalam name for the Ayurvedic therapeutic measure, shirovasti (shirobasti). It is the process of retaining medicinal oil over the head with the help of a suitable cap to provide nourishment to brain cells to prevent brain cell damage.

Njavarakizhi

NjavarakizhiNjavarakizhi is one of traditional treatment forms of Astavaidya tradition in Kerala. It is a procedure by which the whole body or any specific part thereof is made to perspire, by the application of certain medicinal drugs with Njavara (special variety of rice that grows in 60days.) rice puddings externally in the form of bolluses tied up in a muslin bag.

Vasthi

Vasthi is medicated purgation therapy, it is the cleansing of the Pitta and the purification of the blood toxins from the body that are abs can be used as a laxative. This includes senna, prune, bran, flaxseed husk, dandelion root, psyllium seed, cow’s milk, salt, castor oil, raisins and mango juice. When taking these laxatives, it is important to adhere to restricted diet.

Yoga

Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than five thousand years ago. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health and happiness.
